What’s behind the giving of diamond engagement rings at the proposal of marriage?

The Diamond engagement ring is an intensely interesting topic that occupies many Pinterest and online discussion forums. And, you wouldn’t believe just how much the world’s most expensive diamonds cost! But why diamonds?

When did it come to be the symbol of everlasting love? Why do women receive a ring as a promise of impending nuptials but men do not? M.I. Trading has made a business from knowing why and we’re here to share the answers with you.

The first well-documented use of a diamond as an engagement ring can be traced back to Maximilian Archduke of Austria when he proposed to Mary of Burgundy, but before and even after, diamonds weren’t the only way to say I Love you.

Diamond engagement rings came to be the social norm following an advertisement campaign by major diamond buyer DeBeers in the late 1940’s. Expectations of premier, high quality diamonds to secure the affections of your bride to be replaced  the perhaps more simple yet elegant jewelry of the past. In the 1930’s DeBeers controlled over 60% of the rough diamond trade in the world and economic depression severely limited their sales capacity, so they rolled out a fantastic campaign.

“Diamonds are forever” became an instantly recognizable catch phrase and GI’s eager to pop the question upon their return from the front did just that, all at two months salary none the less. Diamond rings became the only way to propose and the idea that a diamond can last forever lent itself well to the power of love and desire for a strong and stable marriage. The practice of exchanging a ring for a promise of fidelity followed wide swept legal reforms in America which abolished shotgun wedding laws. Presenting your betrothed with a ring assured them the contractual agreements of matrimony would be upheld and adding a diamond to the mix just upped the ante.

Moran is so personable! Knowledgeable, friendly and kind. He took the time to educate me on different pieces of sterling silver flatware and gold and silver jewelry. He understands sometimes pieces have significant sentimental value, rather than monetary value, and never pressured a sale. Extremely fair and trustworthy. I highly recommend a visit if you are planning to sell anything gold or silver items.

Highly recommend selling jewelry here! Moran was very personable and transparent in his explanation. He offered a very fair price for my gold snake ring. I would definitely go back if I ever have any jewelry I want to sell in the future.

I’ve worked in jewelry for ten years; so, I was skeptical to visit M.I. before meeting him in person, especially since I wasn’t in a rush to sell some belongings… It was an awesome experience!

Moran is extremely intelligent and factual. I appreciated his insight and sound advice. He and the company are very trustworthy based on facts, advice, guidance, and all information. Everyone needs to know about him! Amazing!

Thank you!

After researching, reading reviews & visiting a few "seemingly" good jewelers, I made up my mind and I chose to do business with M.I. Trading. I felt they were above the others in every way.
Other jewelers made me feel like they were doing me a favor even looking at the jewelry which I wanted to sell. Some others low balled me.
I knew I found someone that I could trust when I went to M.I Trading. Moran did not rush me. He explained everything to me and was completely transparent, because he wanted me to make educated decisions. Nobody else even came close to caring about my business, never mind taking the time to educate me.
At M.I. Trading, I had the opportunity to think about what I wanted to do, without any pressure ... and when I decided what I wanted to sell, Moran gave me TOP DOLLAR.
I could not be happier that I found M.I. Trading, a company that I can trust.

Selling jewelry? When you're dealing with something that you are not an expert in, you must trust the people you're dealing with. After visiting more than one person/company, regarding selling my old jewelry, I found and I TRUST
M.I. Trading. Some other places I visited turned their nose up at my beautiful jewelry and wouldn’t even give me a price! I am relieved & elated that I found M.I. Trading.
I not only liked Moran's personality, but his integrity, knowledge and customer appreciation was unsurpassed by any other person I visited/ spoke with.
Moran seeks to educate you BEFORE you, the customer, makes a decision! Moran seeks to treat his customers the way he would want to be treated . . . and he treated me like a VIP....
VERY important to me!
I am just a person selling my jewelry and I was treated like a return customer, like a friend, like I want to be treated ... AND ... I received TOP dollar for my jewelry.
My experience (s) at M.I. Trading could not have been better!

The wife and I had some flatware to sell. We did some research and came up with a bottom price we would accept and a "wishful thinking" price we would really like. After checking reviews, we settled on M.I.Trading and mad an appointment. Upon arrival we met with Moran and he talked us through the process, how it was weighed and answered all of our questions. When it was said and done, Moran came up with a number that was just short of our "wishing" number. We shook hands, he handed us a check and had us on our way faster than I thought. We would highly recommend M. I. Trading.

I recently decided to sell some sterling silver flatware and other items that were languishing in storage, not wanted by relatives.
I found M.I. Trading on line. Mr. Tairy responded to voicemail immediately and met me at his office the next day. He was helpful, professional, and forthright. He evaluated everything and made an immediate offer. I was sorry to see my pretty things go but left within the hour with a cheque for a substantial and fair price.
